Abstract:    

Our brains constantly generate predictions about future states of the world based on past experience. Auditory predictions and detection of deviant events can be generated even in the absence of conscious perception of the environment, for example, when someone falls into a coma. In the first part of this seminar, I will present evidence that deeply unconscious patients in a post-anoxic coma can detect local and global auditory deviant events at a neural level, and that the integrity of the auditory processing network is predictive of patients’ chances to regain consciousness. The second part of the talk will focus on investigating the neural substrates and timing of auditory processing and predictions in the temporal lobe, measured with intracranial electroencephalography in patients with epilepsy.
