Title: On levels of abstraction and long-term storage of visuospatial working memory information

Abstract: Working memory (WM) is strongly capacity-limited but seems highly efficient in providing task-relevant information at just the right time and in just the right format. In this talk, I will focus on how the momentary format of visual WM information can be characterized in terms of levels of abstraction. Specifically, I will present results from eye-tracking and functional imaging on how abstraction of visuospatial WM information unfolds over time and across the cortical hierarchy. In a second part, I will address factors that may promote the encoding of WM contents into long-term memory (LTM) and discuss WM-LTM crosstalk more generally.
