The WERA Task Force Global Research in Extended Education was represented through an invited symposium on ‘International Comparative Research in the Field of Extended Education: Empirical Approaches and Latest Findings’ at the ERAS Conference & WERA Focal Meeting in Singapore. The session, chaired by Prof. Dr. Marianne Schüpbach and Dr. Haiqin Ning, featured a diverse array of comparative studies between different national contexts.

In reaction to the large impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the education sector worldwide, the organizing committee developed a questionnaire and launched an international comparative study together with researchers from our IRN Extended Education.

Under the conditions of COVID-19, it is our sense that extended education is being pushed aside and forgotten in the midst of of virtual teaching and learning.

This statement intends to bring attention to the great needs that young people have in extended education. The fact that so many students do not have these enriching environments, even virtually, is a very serious matter. Parents understand this issue and want schools to open not only for reasons of academic success, but also for students to be able to socialize and to have safe places to go while parents work.

Please distribute this statement to your national constituencies, policy-makers and practitioners to make the case with us for whole school days, afterschool, extended education programs, summer programs, and more as well as to gain some traction internationally. On May 4, 2020, a webinar with international guests was held to discuss the current situation of extended education.

Subsequently, the chairs of the WERA-IRN Extended Education, Marianne Schüpbach and Gil Noam, released a Statement Concerning the Situation of Children and Youth Worldwide During the COVID-19 Crisis.
